Strathbogie hay getting ready for a big trip

The Burrumbuttock Hay Runners are off on another adventure next month and a Ruffy resident is using Strathbogie Shire’s excess hay to help farmers in need in NSW and Queensland.

Euroa and District Hay Run Support Team co-ordinator Coll Furlanetto is the brains behind the idea and has been overwhelmed by the support she has received, since initially posting on the Euroa Community Noticeboard Facebook page, about two weeks ago.

‘‘I’m absolutely blown away, I’m immensely proud of the response and I am so honoured that people have backed me,’’ Mrs Furlanetto said.

The Burrumbuttock Hay Runners, a group founded in 2014 by Brendan ‘Bumpa’ Farrell, is all about mates helping mates in times of need.

Mrs Furlanetto, who has a small cattle farm, said there were currently three truckloads pledged and she was hoping for more.

‘‘I think we can do five and that would be fantastic,’’ she said.

Mrs Furlanetto said the hay had come from all over the Strathbogie Shire with a couple of large donations.

‘‘Two farmers donated a semi-load each. Depending on the truck, that could be 30-40 rolls of hay.’’

She said it was great to see farmers doing what they do best.

‘‘Supporting each other is what farmers do best. We are all farmers and we all care about each other and we all want to help each other get out of these hard times.’’

Mrs Furlanetto said the Rotary Club of Sydney were handling all monetary donations on the Hay Runners’ behalf as they aren’t an organisation, and these donations will be used to help out in other ways.

‘‘There are people who don’t want to donate hay, but want to contribute fuel donations as this is not fully covered,’’ she said.

‘‘I’m working with a local petrol station to get petrol donations. I’m in the middle of getting that approved.’’

The Hay Run will start at Darlington, near Griffith, in NSW on February 22 and finish on February 25 at Hughenden, near Winton, in Queensland, a trip of 2400km.

For those wanting to contribute hay or fuel donations, pledges will be accepted up to the end of this week.
