Local engagement officers being sought

July 19, 2017

Six local engagement officers will be put in place across the Murray-Darling Basin to consult with community members.

The Commonwealth Environmental Water Holder is looking for local engagement officers to take up six posts across the Murray-Darling Basin.

The positions have been made permanent following a successful three-year pilot program in which officers were trialled in six locations including Deniliquin and Mildura.

Commonwealth Environmental Water Holder David Papps said the decision showed a commitment to continuing dialogue with regional communities across the basin.

‘‘Our priority is to encourage local involvement and collaboration in environmental water management, to help shape water management decisions,’’ he said.

‘‘The local engagement officer supporting the environmental water program in the Goulburn Murray area would work across catchments in the central Murray region in NSW and Victoria.

‘‘The cultural importance of the basin’s unique environment to Aboriginal people is also well recognised and I encourage Aboriginal people with interests in water and natural resource management to apply.’’

The positions will be filled by people who live and work within the six regions and have the skills and on-ground experience to work with a variety of stakeholders including local community groups, governments, landholders, Aboriginal people and environment groups.

Officers are being sought in the following regions: South Australian Murray River; Lower Murray Victoria and NSW; Central Murray; Murrumbidgee and Lachlan; and Queensland and border rivers.

Final locations will depend on where within these regions officers are recruited.
