Shoppers are now able to get Australian-grown cherry tomatoes for their salads and snacking year-round in an Australian first.
SPC has expanded its popular canned tomato range with the introduction of Ardmona Cherry Tomatoes to the shelves of IGA and independent supermarkets.
Australians previously had to make do with canned cherry tomatoes from Italy when the Australian-grown product was out of season.
Strathallan farmer Paul Monigatti had been growing produce for SPC for about three seasons when he got the opportunity to bring his cherry tomatoes to the market in a new way.
‘‘We wanted to have a crack at it,’’ Mr Monigatti said.
He made some adjustments to his crop, including making changes to his harvester to ensure it could pick up the smaller sized tomatoes without losing or damaging the crop.
He believed giving shoppers a local option when it was difficult to source fresh cherry tomatoes was an important step to fighting off the threat of Italian imports.
‘‘We’ve done a bit of a comparison against the canned Italian products that have been coming into the country and people said the SPC product had better flavour and better colour,’’ he said.
‘‘The Australian product is far superior, we’ve got better soil, better climate, it’s clean and green.’’
Ritchies Supa IGA chief executive officer Fred Harrison said it was important to give shoppers a local choice.
‘‘We can finally give Australians the option to buy a home-grown product that tastes great and supports local growers,’’ Mr Harrison said.
Ardmona Canned Cherry Tomatoes are available in 400g tins from IGA.
