Producing the best quality silage was the topic of a recent field day held at Murray Goulburn Trading’s Numurkah site.
The day allowed farmers, contractors and manufacturers to come together to discuss the best ways to inoculate silage.
‘‘It was all about the dos and don’ts of making silage to provide the highest quality product to cows at the other end,’’ Murray Goulburn Trading northern region manager Brad Kirk said.
The field day was an interactive session which found an industry knowledge gap.
‘‘There was genuine knowledge gaps in the industry in inoculating silage,’’ Mr Kirk said.
He said there was a common perception when it came to inoculating low quality silage.
‘‘Many people put inoculant on poor quality silage to improve it — but it should be used on the best quality to maintain that quality,’’ he said.
Silage improvement company Sil-All sent representative Gordon Marley, from the United Kingdom, as the guest speaker on the day.
The field day was supported by Integrated Packaging which makes silage wrap and silage inoculant.
