Saints steamroll Swans

By Georgia Smith

The Saints reached new heights on Saturday, scoring 18 goals in the third quarter alone against the Shepparton Swans at Princess Park.

Benalla stormed away with the game to claim a convincing 225-point win, racking up 38 goals for its four-quarter effort.

Forward Nick Warnock was the biggest goal contributor for the Saints with nine, while Lachie Thompson followed closely by example with six goals.

Other top performers for the Saints on the day included Sam Martyn, James Martyn, Luke Morgan and Tom Bennett.

Coach Luke Morgan put the Saints’ high-scoring display down to the efforts contributed by the entire team.

‘‘The boys were able to move the ball well and it was a great team performance,’’ Morgan said.

‘‘We ended up with 62 scoring shots, which is just unheard of.

‘‘The Swans tried as hard as they could and kept the effort up even though they were down, so credit to them.’’

The final score read (38.24) 252 to (4.3) 27, with the Swans unable to score a goal against the Saints until the third quarter.

Morgan said hitting the front by such a large margin allowed for some room for movement and reshuffling of the Saints players around the ground.

‘‘We were able to get some run into different players in different positions, we changed things up in the midfield and forward line and had some changes in the defensive end as well,’’ he said.

Although experiencing a lot of success in recent weeks, the Saints have a tough month ahead.

The Saints face an inform Shepparton Bears at home this weekend before away matches against Rochester and Mansfield.

Morgan said the team was lucky to have a clear bill of health to get through some of the harder rounds ahead of it.

‘‘It’s going to be a testing month and we’ll have to put our best foot forward,’’ he said.

‘‘This next month we’ll find out where we’re really at.’’

The Shepparton Bears sit fourth on the GVL senior ladder, with the Saints hanging onto second position.

Kick off time for that game is 2pm at the Benalla Showgrounds on Saturday, June 2.
