Tongala abattoir operator HW Greenham & Sons has announced its acquisition of the currently closed Moe meatworks, with production to start again in mid-November.

Currently operating abattoirs in Tongala and Smithton (Tasmania), Greenham has bought the former HY Moe Meat site, in the Latrobe Valley, for an undisclosed sum.

Managing director Peter Greenham Jnr said the company was pleased to have purchased the facility.

‘‘Moe complements our existing operations and we are looking forward to getting started,’’ Mr Greenham said.

‘‘It’s in an excellent region for producing quality cattle and the plant is set up to process them.’’

Closed since 2015, the meatworks will need about 100 staff, with Greenham aiming to use the knowledge of former employees and local workers where possible.

‘‘We understand the importance of employment opportunities in building and maintaining rural communities so we’re keen to see people get back to work in Gippsland,’’ Mr Greenham said.

The new Gippsland business is expected to contribute significant weekly economic activity to the region through wages, payments to ancillary suppliers and livestock transactions.
