VFF: New system not needed
The VFF has expressed its disappointment with the lack of consultation regarding the establishment of the Victorian Government’s Animal Welfare Victoria.
‘‘Farm animal industries already adhere to quality assurance programs. These programs involve extension, education and include monitoring and enforcement through commercial incentives and supplier obligations,’’ VFF president David Jochinke said.
‘‘These industry activities are complementary to the regulatory controls and meet community and international expectations. We reflect Australia’s position as a leader in modern, sustainable and scientifically-based welfare practices.’’
The VFF said the new animal welfare program simply added more cost and more bureaucracy to a system that was already working.
Fox Island Road Bridge closed
Following speed and load limit restrictions placed on Fox Island Road Bridge at Gunbower in February this year, Campaspe Shire Council has now advised that the bridge is closed to all traffic.
Mayor Adrian Weston said the closure was necessary due to further inspections of the bridge revealing it had deteriorated beyond a condition suitable for any traffic.
‘‘Council attempted to keep the bridge open with restricted access, however further deterioration has occurred due to larger weight vehicles continuing to use the bridge and not using the signed detours in place,’’ Cr Weston said.
Last month the Federal Government announced funding of $904200 under Round Three of the Bridges Renewal Program to support the replacement of Fox Island Bridge. This funding will be matched by council to enable a new bridge to be constructed.
‘‘Designs are now under way for the replacement bridge, with works to start in the new financial year in line with the funding guidelines,’’ Cr Weston said.
Works will take about four months to complete.
The detour options are:
■Lovers Lane, under 1km away with a width restriction and 9tonne weight limit; and
■Gibbon Rd, 16km away, an all-weather road with 32tonne weight limit.
