Students having a go

November 29, 2017

Sumera Ali and Nida Ali Bangash put out a line.

Xander Wojcik and Jack Clark are fascinated by the yabbies.

Gowrie St Primary School students squirmed, squealed and widened their eyes in wonder during a Rotary-led yabbying excursion last week.

A joint initiative of Shepparton Central Rotary Club and the Lighthouse Project, the Year 6 students regularly take part in excursions with volunteers.

Geoff Dobson said his fellow Rotarians were among hundreds of volunteers around Shepparton engaging children through sailing, bushwalking, fishing and local museum tours.

‘‘It helps to look after some of the young people who might need somebody to talk to and we’re there and today we’ll be mentoring a few of the kids,’’ Mr Dobson said.

‘‘It’s about engaging them and putting them in a situation they’ve never been in before, something enjoyable and not out of their comfort zone.

‘‘It shows them a different slant on life than what they might be used to.’’
