More than 10 years since it hosted its last rodeo, Euroa is gearing up to join the Australian Pro Rodeo Association circuit with a huge event next year.
Euroa Pro Rodeo committee member Troy Spencer said the town hosted its last rodeo in 2005 and recent community interest had sparked the organising committee to form.
‘‘There was interest expressed on the Euroa Community Noticeboard Facebook page,’’ Mr Spencer said.
‘‘There’s also a community of people who ride together frequently and we know there would be a following for the event as a result.’’
The APRA-accredited event will have competitors earn full points on the rodeo circuit following on from events in Chiltern, Kyabram and Merrigum.
‘‘A lot of the rodeo competitors will do those events and continue on to Euroa,’’ Mr Spencer said.
‘‘There’ll be international competitors from America, Canada and New Zealand.
‘‘And there’s also the potential for Australian competitors to qualify to compete overseas.’’
With more than $12000 in prize money up for grabs, the rodeo will have a jam-packed program for the expected 150 competitors, culminating in the high stakes bull riding during the evening.
‘‘We’ll be running a division two for the people who want to have a go; they wouldn’t have a title yet, but would be working towards getting one,’’ Mr Spencer said.
Other events will include saddle bronc and bareback riding, junior steer riding, barrel and junior barrel racing.
‘‘The good ones will make it into the evening’s events, which will be the highlight of all the action,’’ Mr Spencer said.
Starting from 4pm on March 24 next year, the rodeo will also feature live entertainment from country musician Steve Eales.
The event was made possible thanks to its sponsors as well as a $3000 Strathbogie Shire Council event start-up grant.
‘‘We’re still looking for sponsors too,’’ committee member Dee Vidler said.
‘‘We are happy for both financial sponsorship as well as in-kind sponsorship.’’
Tickets for the event cost $25 for adults and $10 for children.
