April 22, 1991: Catch of a lifetime didn't get away!

Jason, Matthew and Shaun with the cod before it was frozen.

Catching a 20kg Murray Cod is a little like a hole in one at golf - that does not happen every day and for some, try as they may it never happens.

But a Mooroopna boy and his two Shepparton mates have the cod in the bag, well, in the freezer at least.

Jason Pearce, 14, of Mooroopna, and Matthew McDonald, 13, and Shaun Walker, 15, both of Shepparton, landed a 20.4 kg cod while fishing in the Murray River near Tocumwal on Thursday.

The trio - we haven't quite worked out who did what when it came to actually catching the fish - caught the king of the Murray while spinning from a boat.

Jason's father Vin said he had been trying for years to catch such a fish, but as yet had been unsuccessful.

"This could be a once in a lifetime job," he said.

The cod is presently stored in a freezer and Mr Pearce expects it will be cut up this week and shared among the three proud young fisherman.
