Thousands of homes were left without power across the Goulburn Valley as a storm lashed the region last night.

The storm arrived at about 6.30pm, with strong winds bringing down trees and causing traffic hazards across roads, while lightning sparked a number of small fires.

Emergency services were inundated with calls for assistance across Greater Shepparton and the wider Goulburn Valley.

In the space of 30 minutes State Emergency Services and Country Fire Authority crews attended 29 jobs in Shepparton, 24 at Tatura and 22 at Numurkah with the majority of the calls being for trees down, building damage and trees over roads.

The CFA attended a number of call outs for traffic lights not working across Shepparton and Shepparton East.

Power outages hit hard in Shepparton, where 1519 Powercor customers were affected and Tatura which had 1475 homes or businesses with no power, while 982 Nathalia residences were powerless.

Elsewhere power was down at Kialla and Kialla West for a combined 455 homes.

Undera, Mooroopna and Kyabram also experienced significant outages.
