A relatively new Queensland MP has been elevated to the federal agriculture and water ministry in a cabinet reshuffle announced by Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.
David Littleproud, 41, was elected to the seat of Maranoa, based in Dalby, representing the National Party, last year.
He takes over from Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce, who now has the infrastructure portfolio.
Meanwhile, Victorian Senator Bridget McKenzie has also been elevated to the ministry with responsibilities for sport, rural health and regional communications.
Infrastructure Minister Darren Chester was dumped in the wide-ranging cabinet reshuffle, ostensibly to make way for more Queensland National Party members.
Mr Joyce had insisted Mr Chester, a Victorian, make way for more Queenslanders given a large proportion of the Nationals’ party room comes from the sunshine state.
‘‘It’s a big country, and we’ve got to take into account wide representation,’’ Mr Turnbull said.
Federal Member for Murray Damian Drum has been appointed assistant to the Deputy Prime Minister.
