Boost for mobile coverage

Better mobile connectivity is on its way for travellers on the Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo, Traralgon and Seymour rail lines.

But the funding for more mobile towers will not extend from Seymour to Shepparton.

Member for Shepparton Suzanna Sheed said it was pleasing more than half of the journey from Melbourne to Shepparton would have mobile coverage.

She said many would welcome the opportunity to be connected all the way through without being interrupted.

She said constituents had raised connectivity on the Shepparton-Melbourne rail corridor from time to time as an issue, citing drop-outs.

The Victorian Government is also installing free public wi-fi in Bendigo and Ballarat but not Shepparton.

Meanwhile, the Victorian Government has described Malcolm Turnbull as the Prime Minister of Sydney, criticising the inequitable distribution of funding for infrastructure to the states.

Major Projects Minister Jacinta Allan said: ‘‘Victorians should stick up for Victoria, not be cheerleading for Malcolm Turnbull and the infrastructure racket he’s running for his home state of New South Wales.’’

Ms Sheed said the funding would benefit the volume of Sheppartonians who travelled to Seymour to board the train to Melbourne due to a lack of Shepparton services.

Following this year’s state budget, Ms Sheed said Shepparton was starting to see rail funding and improvements being forthcoming, but said there was still a long way to go.

‘‘We see these announcements, and are inclined to think more of the goodies going to major players,’’ she said.

‘‘In this case, I am pleased to see (connectivity on) the Seymour line ... it does bring home how the extra distance disadvantages us.

‘‘I look forward to the day where we’ll have eight rail services per day, serviced by new trains with technical capacity to connect to towers being built, to have the whole trip connected.’’
