Can you tell us about Jet’s relationship with the cows?
He’s a very friendly dog. He spends most of his time with the cows. He sleeps with them and when we are rearing calves, he is there too. The cows don’t bother him and he doesn’t bother them. He does constantly run around with the calves. He’s protective of them. He hates when you’re moving them — he’ll chase the trailer.
He will also eat grain and silage with the cows and clean up all the spilled milk from the calves.
I hear his relationship with foxes isn’t as friendly?
I know when a fox is there. He’ll go crazy. He hates foxes. I was at the shed one day and could hear a noise like a duck being attacked. It was a fox. Jetty-boy chased after the fox across the paddock and down a drain and then stopped before he got far away. I was surprised he chased him. He definitely hates foxes.
Is there anything else he dislikes?
Other dogs, he hates thunder too.
Has he gone on any adventures?
One day, I had 10 calves on the feeder. I got a call from the neighbours saying the calves were at their place and Jetty had gone with them.
What does he eat?
He gets his tinned food, dry pellets and he gets a bone now and then. He will also get household scraps as well.
Does he like the motorbike or the ute?
He won’t go on the motorbike, he just follows. I never put him in the ute when he was a pup so he doesn’t know what’s going on if I try now.
What would you do without him?
I don’t know. He’s got a real good personality that if something did happen to him, I would definitely get another Maremma as he loves animals and loves it on the farm.
